Pirastro INSULA – new violin strings with a gut-like core

INSULA is Pirastro's new synthetic-core violin string for 2026. The newly developed core is designed to imitate the elasticity of a gut string without its sensitivity. The result is a warm basic tone with plenty of overtones and a distinctive range of colours.

Sound, response and tuning stability

The strings react immediately to the bow, so notes take shape without delay. After fitting, they need only a very short time to reach their final sound. Even when temperature or humidity change, the tuning stays stable, which saves time in concerts as well as in daily practice.

String construction

  • E: steel, removable ball end
  • A: synthetic core, aluminium wound, ball end
  • D and G: synthetic core, silver wound, ball end

These violin strings come only in 4/4 with medium tension, as a complete set and as single strings. They are aimed at orchestral and chamber musicians, soloists and ambitious amateurs.

INSULA, Obligato or Evah Pirazzi Gold?

In terms of tension, Pirastro places INSULA between Pirastro Obligato and Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Gold. If you play Obligato and would like a little more tension, or find Gold slightly too firm, INSULA is worth trying as a middle way. How strings work on your violin always depends on the instrument as well. If you have questions about choosing strings, we are happy to advise you by email or phone.
